Affiliate Marketing is based upon ad networks. You place your ad with one company, let them know what you will pay a publisher for showing your ad, they distribute it for you. This intermediate company's job is to recurite publishers willing to place your product and or service on their website. It acts like word of mouth marketing in that if someone clicks and purchases - you make money.

In Affliate Marketing there are two sides - the publisher (you place content on the site) and the advertiser (you provide content for a publisher). In all cases, Affiliate Marketing is a win-win approach to monetizing your site by letting another company find the advertisers for you and then you control which advertisers in their network you want to post on your site. The term 'Affliate Marketing' is described as such: Your website is 'Affiliated' through a simple sign-up process. Publishers or websites with content frequently display ads on their site and as a rule they come from affiliate marketing. You join an Affilate Network. You are an 'Affilate' of a company that already have scores of advertisers willing and ready to pay you money if you just put their ad on their site. During that process the company will set the payout rate (either flat fee or percentage of sale). These 'advertisers' can be large companies or small companies.

Advertisers: How is Affiliate Marketing different from direct advertising on a PPC (Pay Per Click) basis, like ad words? Simple, your cost is based upon you actually getting a client. It served not only to generate a lead for you but gives you the ability to close a sale with the client before you pay. Not everyone time someone clicks, not per lead but per sale. Yes, you might pay a set-up fee to become part of the network and have your ad distributed to thousands of websites. But - if you believe in your product or service, then perhaps in the first 3-5 clients you gain, your set-up fee is returned.

Publishers: You have a print magazine or newspaper and now you have a website. You are a publisher of content, or offer services, or sell products. You want to make money on your website but might be charging your clients based upon traditional media kit pricing and you are getting very few contracts.
